V.A. - Tappa Records Showcase (LP)NUBIAN
¥4,388

This exclusive compilation showcases the very best of Tappa Zukie's productions from 1988 to 1994, featuring an all-star lineup of legendary Jamaican vocalists and backed by top musicians such as Sly & Robbie and Clive Hunt. Each track has been remastered and is available together on vinyl for the first time ever. "When your mother and your father forsake you, the Lord God Jah will pick you up."

These were the words spoken by the people of Trench Town (Kingston, Jamaica) to a young Tappa Zukie, who began running away from home at the age of twelve. Drawn to the allure of the Rude Boy gangs, Tappa was captivated by Kingston’s thriving Sound System culture, where every neighborhood pulsed with music. It was in this vibrant environment that the young Tappa Zukie first began deejaying, quickly gaining recognition as a rising star in the dancehall scene.

This early success solidified his deep connection to music, as he developed a sharp intuition for what the dancehall crowds craved. Over the next two decades, Tappa would find both fame and fortune as a deejay, but his influence reached far beyond the mic. He became known as a visionary producer, founding the Stars label, which became a platform for legendary artists like Prince Alla, Junior Ross, Horace Andy, Knowledge to name a few during reggae's golden age of the 1970s Roots era.

By the mid-1980s, as Jamaican reggae evolved both in style and production techniques, Tappa responded by launching Tappa Records. This album is a carefully curated selection of ten tracks from Tappa Records, spanning the years 1986 to 1994. These ten tracks—produced by Tappa Zukie—highlight some of Jamaica’s finest singers and deejays, and while the music reflects the shifting styles of Jamaican music at the time, the deep influence of Roots is unmistakable. The themes of Roots music are still front and center, not just in the lyrics but in the very fabric of the production itself, a sound that has since become known among reggae music addicts as "Digital Roots."

Tappa Zukie and his talented array of musicians developed a sound that remains fresh even today, a testament to their creative vision. It has since become a reference for modern reggae producers, especially within the sound system scene, where Tappa's innovative work continues to inspire and set the standard for the next generation of reggae music.

“Summer Jam” is back! A long-awaited repress of this powerful and joyful tune described as “acid pied piper”, with new artwork and new flip-side. EM Records is very happy to again bring you our & your favorite tune from the artist known as Tapes, here in a 10-inch vinyl/download format that, with its good vibes, positivity and major-key delightfulness, will rescue you from any doldrums you are experiencing, whether personal, societal or cosmic. “Summer Jam” is a solo recording from 2019, but it soars over the worries of the year, any year, with an uplifting rhythmic lilt, a positive tonality, non-annoyingly catchy melodies and some lovely sonic textures. There’s something here for fans of bass music, mid-80s-and-beyond electronic music, and pure toe-tapping good times. There’s a sweet chord progression and background drift in the title track that are particularly pleasing, and the flip-side is a very satisfying “acid” live version with his ally, 7FO, that will lovingly catapult you to another major-chord heaven. The sun can shine anywhere, anywhen, so enjoy!

Rough Trade release limited edition 7-inch singles boxsets to celebrate label's formative years (1978-1993) Having consistently released music by innovative, visionary, and transformative artists, Rough Trade have been defining record collections since their first release in 1977 (RT001 saw the shop help French punks Metal Urbain put out single Paris Maquis), continuing to release cutting edge albums and tracks right up to, and including the present day, with their current roster boasting the likes of Amyl and The Sniffers, Pulp, Jockstrap, Anohni, Dean Blunt, Sleaford Mods and many more. Now, to mark 45-plus years of the label, its co-MDs Jeannette Lee and Geoff Travis have indulged in a rare retrospective look, personally putting together two boxsets featuring some of their favourite singles released by Rough Trade during its formative years. Accompanied by new sleeve notes featuring the pair's recollections, impressions and opinions, these limited-edition collections are no bog-standard trawl through the back catalogue but a personal look at the hits, gems, bangers, growers, underrated classics and more. Chronicling Rough Trade's emergence from behind the counter of the West London shop of the same name in the late 1970s, the first boxset in the series fizzes with the daring, Do It Yourself attitude that underpinned punk and subsequent musical expressions that surrounded the label's birth. "Typically for Rough Trade there wasn't a strategy,” says Jeannette of her and Geoff's enduring partnership at the heart of Rough Trade Records. "We just jumped in and hit it off. So, we've stuck together!"
Roots Architects - From Dub 'Til Now (LP)Roots Architects - From Dub 'Til Now (LP)
Roots Architects - From Dub 'Til Now (LP)Fruits Records
¥4,736

Bringing together over 50 of Jamaica's greatest session musicians, whose work spans from the birth of reggae in the late 1960s until today, Roots Architects is the largest gathering of Jamaican musical talent on one all-instrumental album. Never before have so many veterans, who helped create the immortal rhythms that made reggae internationally successful, been assembled to play on new material without vocals. This project aims to celebrate and pay tribute to the unsung heroes of reggae music: the rhythm builders or Roots Architects. Following the outstanding success of the first chapter of the project, From Then 'Til Now (2024), Fruits Records is pleased to reveal the dub album From Dub 'Til Now. A veritable immersion in the mythical sound of Kingston studios in the late 1970s. Dub master Roberto Sánchez sublimates the work of the Roots Architects with wildly inventive sound experiments. Reminiscent of the finest years of King Tubby, Lee "Scratch" Perry and Scientist.

The project is the brainchild of Swiss keyboardist and producer Mathias Liengme. In 2013, he travelled to Kingston, Jamaica, to produce The Inspirators project, an all-star album gathering Leroy ”Horsemouth” Wallace, Lloyd Parks, Earl ”Chinna” Smith and Sangie Davis, the four of them acting both as musicians and vocalists. This first experience in Kingston studio life paved the way to what would become the Roots Architects project. In February and March 2017 Mathias Liengme travelled for the fifth time to Kingston to record as many of reggae’s greatest living veteran musicians as he could. With the help of a few of these Architects like Robbie Lyn, Fil Callender or Dalton Browne, he managed to gather over 50 session musicians aged 60 to 85 on nine instrumental songs.

Roots Architects are legends back together in Kingston studios doing what they do best: creating instrumental music all together!

Hiss Is Bliss - Nope / Abbadia (7")
Hiss Is Bliss - Nope / Abbadia (7")ZamZam Sounds
¥2,756
ZamZam 95 is a link with the enigmatic French producer Hiss Is Bliss. We’ve been fans since the very first drop on their 777Hz label and these two sides drive straight to the heart of the dub techno galaxy. Little is known about Hiss Is Bliss beyond the fact that they hail from France, are steeped in esotericism, and create tunes as masterfully grounded in roots reggae as they are in techno and related strands of electronic music. Their releases are utterly free of hype, beautifully crafted 10” vinyl plates that let the singers and tracks speak for themselves. At the risk of being cheeky, “Nope” is absolute dub techno bliss. The 808 kick propels the track relentlessly forward, saturated washes of color streak the night sky, while syncopated hi hats and warm, soulful chords bring life- dare we say funk- to a style too often stiff and clinical, too in thrall to the past to truly step forward. Matching Hiss is Bliss in mystery, Ras Lys’ vocal brings a Dread perspective on music and the sometimes shady business of music, a grounded contrast to the deep inner space explored by the tune itself. The B-side version “Abbadia” splits musical atoms through the desk, focusing squarely on the stripped 4/4 elements and gloriously distorted pads that echo and cycle like tides in a darkly shimmering sea.

Om Unit - Acid Dub Studies III (LP)Om Unit Self Released
¥4,893

Jim Coles’s fifth instalment of his best-selling ‘Acid Dub Studies’ series arrives in the form of the third set of original works exploring the infectious sound of the 303 bass-line in a dubwise setting. The album takes in traditional dub mixing approaches in a digital and roots/digi-dub style whilst also making space for more electronic and ambient processes to close the project.

‘Acid Dub Studies III’ arrives after 2 years of touring the material in a live setting at festivals and clubs including CTM at Berghain, Les Nuits Sonores, and Andrew Weatherall's Convenanza festival and is the culmination of some 5 years of experimenting with a style that has been met with critical acclaim, reaching far and wide into many a DJ’s box having been noted by some as a truly ground-breaking approach to working with the 303.

The distinctive mystic croon of Daweh Congo charges a militant, digi roots anthem from 2000, reissued at a nicer price by Belgium’s Roots Vibration after 2nd hand prices have climbed

Back in the sun (or moonlight) for first time in 25 years, ‘Prophecy Reveal’ secretes Daweh Congo’s Rasta gnosticism on a swole sub and sloshing digi drums punctuated by tuff snares, found brighter and spare in hypnotic fashion on the dub-pinged B-side version.

A big ‘90s digidub tune sees light of day again on Belgium’s Roots Vibration

Daweh Congo lights up ’Fi Years’ with a resounding vocal anthem about struggle and resistance, on blazing horns, lilting nyabinghi and trenchant bass produced by Mikey “Jah Son” McNeil, stripped back to fundamentals in the subtly dubbed out B-side version.

Augustus Pablo - Dubbing In Africa (LP)ABRAHAM (CANADA)
¥3,364

Classic selection of Augustus Pablo dubs, faithfully reissued right down to the misspelling of his name on the front cover! The legendary melodica-maestro is featured here on the organ with a supporting cast of Sly & Robbie on drums & bass, Bingy Bunny 'pon rhythm guitar, Sticky on percussion and Melodic Gladdy (wicked name!) on piano. As the title tells us, there's an African theme at its core, from the referential track titles such as 'Dub In Ethiopia' and 'Nigerian Dub Love' to 'Dubbing In Africa' to the sweeter guitar licks and the generally lighter-headed, sun-soaked charm of Pablo's spiritual, intuitive playing.

Various Artists - Midnight Rock's Secret Tapes LP (LP)Radiation Roots
¥3,189

When Nkrumah Jah Thomas’ hit #1 on the Jamaican charts in 1976 with his debut single ‘Midnight Rock’ on Alvin Ranglin’s GG label it gave the new DJ a theme song and an entry into the world of music. Within 3 years he had launched his own label Midnight Rock and alongside more music under his own name he produced a series of classics by the likes of Tristan Palmer, Anthony Johnson, Early B and many more.

In 1997 he signed a deal with Acid Jazz’s Roots label and since then through our on-going collaborations his career as a producer has been anthologised and developed, including the release of a series of archive King Tubby and Scientist mixes, the use of his masters to be sampled by Nas (on The Don), Protoje and others, and re-issues of his classic albums. To celebrate 40 year of Midnight Rock, last year Thomas went back into his tape archive to unearth another 10 tracks, either with original vocals or guest names brought in.

Behind original rhythms recorded at Channel 1, Tuff Gong and others, featuring the Roots Radics and The Midnight Rock Band and mixed in places like King Jammy’s and Tubby’s we are given a line-up of stellar talent. We have Lynval Thomson with the plaintive ‘I Can Be Your Man’, and forthright Super Cat on ‘Me Glad She Gone’ and first rare Luciano on ‘Good Thing Goin’ On. They are joined by Courtney Melody, Pinchers and Joesy Wales, Daville and more. Keeping the circle whole Thomas appears on two tracks including the future classic ‘Sounds A Go Dead Tonight’ with Junior Vibes.

Gathered together on record this will be released by The Roots label on the 19th of April 2021.

Creation Rebel / New Age Steppers - Threat to Creation (LP)
Creation Rebel / New Age Steppers - Threat to Creation (LP)Lantern Rec.
¥3,641
Released on Cherry Red in 1981, Threat To Creation spotted the collaboration between two mystical entities : Creation Rebel and New Age Steppers. Forerunners of the british dub scene the two bands shared several members, a who’s who of the On U-Sound school and key figures of the Bristol and London scene. Adrian Sherwood is – obviously – the man behind the desk a craftsman on its own, a character with no borders and one of the most sought after producer of the time. The supergroup is ran by post-punk stalwarts Bruce Smith (The Pop Group) on drums and Keith Levene (PIL) on guitar. Ari Up of The Slits sits on piano and organ, while masters Crucial Tony is both on bass and guitars. Members of African Head Charge – bass player George Oban, Eskimo Fox and Style Scott on drums – are welcomed addition to the line-up. Threat To Creation is still recognizable as an album ahead of its time, a futuristic blend filling the gap between the Jamaican heritage, the so-called (post) industrial revolution and the studio witchery of the whitey man.
Adrian Sherwood - The Grand Designer EP (10")Adrian Sherwood - The Grand Designer EP (10")
Adrian Sherwood - The Grand Designer EP (10")On-U Sound
¥3,145

Adrian Sherwood returns with the mutating rhythmic soundscapes of The Grand Designer, a four track EP and the latest instalment in On-U Sound's long-running and much-loved 'disco plate' series.

The title track and lead single is out today, and serves as a trailer for a forthcoming full-length album, with different instruments filtered through Sherwood's bank of effects over an irresistible groove, and typically deft percussive detail.

"Let's Come Together" flips the same rhythm into a mystical dub, with sadly departed friend and collaborator Lee "Scratch" Perry providing typically off-the-wall vocal interjections. It also serves as a reminder of the wealth of collaborative projects Sherwood has released in recent years, releasing critically acclaimed new albums not only with Perry, but also Horace Andy, Sonic Boom & Panda Bear, African Head Charge, Spoon, Creation Rebel, Pinch, and more.

"Russian Oscillator" perhaps cleaves closest to the Sherwood & Pinch records, experimental electronics weaving in and out of heavy sound system sonics and a ruffneck dancehall adjacent swing.

The EP closes with "Cold War Skank", a left hand turn off the highway into scorched desert blues, distorted slide guitar patterns over widescreen film score atmospherics.

Available as a strictly limited and collectable 10" vinyl, mastered and cut by Frank Merritt at The Carvery, housed in a classic On-U disco plate sleeve, with cover collage by Studio Tape-Echo.

Omid Geadizadeh - Like The Sea Knows Blue (مثل دریا که آبی را می شناسد) (12")WAH WAH WINO
¥3,467

One of very few labels we can think of around atm that have a certified buy-on-sight status, Wino consistently do it with 100% suss and 0% fuss, here with the solo debut of Wino co-founder Omid Geadizadeh, with Morgan Buckley on the remix.

A follow-up to that deadly Wino-E LP (quietly, inarguably one of the records of the year - just incred), 'Like The Sea Knows Blue' deploys a trio of percolating summer jams like some lost dubplate of skanking 1980’s basement jams relocated from NYC to Tehran, powered by a glorious santur. Think Tapes via Wackies, with added sunbeams.

On the remix, Morgan Buckley gives it a 90’s breakbeat heat, with subs and chopped vocal samples to boot.

They never miss.

Keith Hudson - Playing It Cool & Playing It Right (LP)
Keith Hudson - Playing It Cool & Playing It Right (LP)Week-End Records
¥5,769
Keith Hudson, who temporarily worked as a dentist in the ghettos of Kingston, emigrated to New York City in 1976 and died there prematurely in 1984. He is best known for his work as a producer for artists such as U-Roy, Big Youth, Ken Boothe and Horace Andy and within short order Hudson brought his all-round talent to full fruition. In 1974, he produced two ground-breaking albums. “Pick A Dub” was one of the first official dub albums ever, and is still considered to be one of the greatest moments of Jamaican music. In addition, the unique “Flesh Of My Skin, Blood Of My Blood” became the first concept album in reggae history. Thematically dedicated entirely to black history, this masterpiece captivates with an atmosphere that is as dark as it is deeply spiritual, charged by Hudson’s eccentric vocals. In 1981, he created the dub masterpiece “Playing It Cool, Playing It Right” which he produced with the help of Wackie’s founder and mastermind Lloyd ‘Bullywackie’ Barnes. It remained the only collaboration between the two producers. Hudson decided to release it on his own label Joint International as he has done on his previous releases. The album continues Hudson’s psycho-acoustic journey into the abyss of existence and has the power to overwhelm the listener with the beauty of artistic self-empowerment. “Too Much Formula” sings Hudson, whose voice occasionally recalls Sly Stone, “Darkest Night” answers an echoing background chorus found elsewhere on the track “California”. Hudson’s production techniques are fascinating on this album. We often hear a kind of flashing-whip sound on the snare, which adds dynamics to the whole album. Rarely has a dub record sounded so electrifying, with radical spatial sound spreading out in all directions and rarely has it been as crystal clear, with warm bass and echophonic treatments as contained within these 30 minutes of music. 43 years after its first release and 20 years after its last re-release on the German-British label Basic Replay (Basic Channel/Honest Jon’s), “Playing It Cool, Playing It Right” is now finally available again via Week-End Records, with a newly revised master and a rare interview with Lloyd ‘Bullywackie’ Barnes, talking on the making of this amazing album.

Horace Ferguson - Sensi Addict (CS)
Horace Ferguson - Sensi Addict (CS)333
¥2,498
333 reissues a serious all-timer of an LP from the peak of reggae/dancehall's mid-to-late 1980s digital era, in the form of Horace Ferguson's Sensi Addict - recorded for Prince Jazzbo's Ujama label and originally released back in 1987. Produced & arranged by the late great Jazzbo (and issued here under license from the foundation deejay & producer's family) the Sensi Addict LP pulls together a selection of vocals recorded between 1984 & 1987 at Michael Carroll's Creative Sounds studio in Kingston, recorded by engineer (and singer & producer in his own right) Paul Davidson. Horace's infectious falsetto can be found riding a collection of Jazzbo's digital rhythms - from the inspired Replay version on 'Jah Order', to the updated take on the foundational Sleng Teng rhythm track on 'Tranquilizer' - representing some of the most forward-thinking production of the period outside of Jammys and King Tubby's Firehouse stables. The bulk of these rhythm tracks were performed by revered multi-instrumentalist Tyrone Downie (a long-time member of Bob Marley & The Wailers since the mid 70s, who sadly passed last November) alongside Tony "Asher" Brissett - another massively undersung session musician perhaps most notable for laying down the initial Sleng Teng rhythm track for Jammys in 1984. Also on display here are a couple of choice early 80s rhythms, recorded for Jazzbo by Errol "Flabba" Holt's legendary Roots Radics backing band. All of this comes paired with sympathetically reproduced artwork - featuring images of Horace by photographer and reggae documentarian, Beth "Kingston" Lesser.
