Mong Tong's latest album, "Tao Fire 道火", not only continues the idea behind their previous work, "Indies 印", but also incorporates more local elements such as gamelan music, phin guitar, tabla drums, and Taiwan sisomi. While sampling more sounds from the street of Southeast Asia, including weddings, funerals, and traditional celebrations, Mong Tong again explores different folk sounds around Austronesia. Different to their last Guruguru Brain release "Mystery 秘神", "Tao Fire 道火" will take us to a land that is both familiar and fresh. Feel the hot, the crowd, humidity, and ecstasy. The 2019 masterpiece by Taipei-based brother duo Mong Tong—who have previously released works on labels such as WV Sorcerer Productions and Guruguru Brain—is now available on cassette! The title “明” (“brightness”) derives from the ideogram combining the sun and the moon, embodying a concept that explores the threshold between light and darkness, everyday life and dreamscapes. Echoes of psychedelic rock, Southeast Asian folk motifs, shimmering synths, and mellow melodies overlap, unfolding within gently hypnotic rhythms that guide the listener into otherworldly landscapes. Transcending psychedelic ornamentation, the album carries a meditative, spacious atmosphere, standing at the crossroads of ambient, drone, and experimental music—a sonic journey that bridges dream and reality.

From Tokyo’s emerging sound art imprint ato.archives, comes a striking new cassette compilation that offers a panoramic view of Taiwan’s modular synth scene. Curated by Yama Yuki, this release crystallizes the sonic strata shaped by experimental electronic artists across Taiwan. Pulses, fragments, echoes, overtones—sounds that trace the edges of landscapes, gently unsettling the borders between city and nature, body and memory. With its restrained structure, the compilation evokes an East Asian sense of time and poetic minimalism.
