Outside of the international house underground, where his early ‘90s works for the Far East Recording label he co-founded with Shinichiro Yokota are rightly celebrated as bona-fide classics, Soichi Terada is best-known for his work composing music for video games. Yet until now, few of his productions for video games have been released outside of Japan, especially on vinyl. Apes In The Net, a six-track EP featuring music composed for the popular PlayStation 1 series Ape Escape, sets the record straight. It not only showcases Terada’s quality as a composer and producer, but also his versatility. Like much of Terada’s work on the Ape Escape series, the tracks featured don’t explore deep, New York and New Jersey influenced house sounds, but rather his lesser-celebrated love of jungle and drum & bass – a sound he fully explored on 1996 album Sumo Jungle. “The producer of the Ape Escape games heard that and got in touch,” Soichi remembers. “They asked me to make the soundtrack, and then work on the music for the sequels after that. I used to love making music with AKAI hardware samplers, synthesisers, and computers, so I played and recorded the tracks using almost the same methods as I did when I made house music. Using breakbeats and audio samples with a sampler was the most useful way to make the soundtracks.” The six tracks on show, which were originally recorded in the ‘90s but reconstructed and remastered for Japan-only CD and digital releases over a decade ago, mix elements of Terada’s familiar deep house style – think warming chords and pads, memorable melodies, and emotive musical motifs – with blistering D&B breakbeats, 16-bit synth sounds, electronic bleeps and undeniably weighty basslines. They’ve stood the test of time and arguably sound just as fresh now as they did at the turn of the millennium.

Released in 2016, this album was created primarily using the legendary vintage 1980s Cheetah MS800 synthesizer, showcasing Aphex Twin's signature experimental spirit. Layering retro textures, it weaves thick basslines and uniquely distorted electronics into undulating currents that gradually pull listeners deeper. Its inorganic yet oddly humorous, strangely addictive texture is Aphex Twin's signature sonic magic. A singular classic born from the fusion of vintage gear devotion and futuristic soundscapes.

This is the second album after the transfer of the company, which was released in 1995, and is a compilation of songs created between 1990 and 1994. The album is a work that encompasses the dichotomy and diversity of the Aphex Twin, with acid, noise, and broken beats that could be described as "drill'n'bass," while following the ambient, IDM, and hardcore techno of the early days. Squarepusher's debut album has been remastered and reissued for the 25th anniversary! Feed Me Weird Things", the shocking debut album by the genius Squarepusher, had a huge impact on the music scene. The long-awaited reissue of the album, which has not been available on CD, LP, streaming or download for more than 10 years, is scheduled for June 4th, exactly 25 years after its release! To coincide with the announcement, "Theme From Ernest Borgnine" was released! This reissue, supervised by Squarepusher himself, has been remastered from the original DAT, and includes the two songs "Theme From Goodbye" and "Deep Borgnine" that appeared on the B-side of the EP "Squarepusher Plays..." released at the same time. The 16-page booklet includes self-reflective liner notes, explanations of each song including information on the equipment used, and rare photos and notes from the early days of the band's career. The domestic CD with paper jacket comes in high quality UHQCD (playable on all CD players) and includes a translation of the booklet, a bilingual translation of Richard D. James' contribution, and a commentary. His latest album, "Be Up A Hello," released in 2020, drew attention for its extensive use of 90's equipment, but if you listen to "Feed Me Weird Things," which includes songs he wrote when he was just 19 years old, you will understand that the early impulses of that time still drive him today, and that he continues to create unconventional works. One of the reasons why "Me Weird Things" shines so brightly in the electronic music scene, where various sub-genres have emerged, and stands out from other good works by other artists of the same era, is that Tom Jenkinson, who was strongly influenced by jazz, has achieved a revolutionary fusion of jazz and electronics, and has been able to create a new style of music that is very different from the one that has come before. One of the reasons it stood apart from the better works of its time was that it was the first work in which Tom Jenkinson, heavily influenced by jazz, achieved an innovative fusion of jazz and electronics, and showcased his superb bass playing. While the intricately composed and sometimes super-fast developing beats were inspiring, the already accomplished bass playing sounded pleasant and appealing, captivating all progressive music fans. Squarepusher is a man who wonders what kind of sound he can make without using the flute as an instrument, using only the holes in the flute. Richard Rodgers and Julie Andrews brought us the Sound of Music, or the sound of music, John Cage and Simon & Garfunkel brought us the sound of silence (in "4:33" and "The Sound of Silence"), and now Square Pusher is bringing us the sound of music that has never been heard before. And now, Square Pusher brings us the "Sound of Sound," or "the sound of sound. - Richard D. Jams Richard D. James (original text on artwork) The track list of "Feed Me Weird Things", one of the most important works for "Rephlex" run by Richard D. James and Grant Wilson Claridge, was supervised by Richard based on the tape given to him by Tom. The artwork also includes the only contribution Richard has ever written for another artist (a bilingual translation is included in the commentary of the domestic CD). After his early EPs and "Feed Me Weird Things" released in 1996, Squarepusher signed with Warp and released "Port Rhombus EP" at the end of the same year, followed by "Vic Acid EP" and "Hard Normal Daddy" in 1997, and has been at the forefront of the label ever since.

With an intrigue for a particular niche of old UK hardcore which takes cues from Sheffield bleep ambience, heady rave futurism and soft, almost new age synth pads, Blank Mind presents ‘Lost Paradise: Blissed Out Hardcore 91-94’. Though the records gathered for the compilation span a short three-year period and bridge the gap between scenes, the collection manages to find a sweet spot where the influence of Warp’s Artificial Intelligence, back room chill out sonics and the nascent jungle boom meet with elements of Italian piano house and slower breakbeat cuts. Opting to focus on atmosphere to highlight shared connections; in this case the duality of often serene and calming soundscapes with frenzied breaks and bass (see Hedgehog Affair’s ‘Parameters’ and Luxury’s ‘Twirl’ respectively); Lost Paradise is a formidable collection of tracks plucked from a thriving time for British dance music experimentation. The general themes of ascension and escapism channelled through digital samplers are also inescapably linked to a turbulent time in politics, beginning in the post-Thatcher years and culminating in the year the harshest anti-rave Criminal Justice Act came into force. Initially building the compilation around DJ Mayhem’s track ‘Inesse’, Blank Mind label founder Sam Purcell and Amsterdam based producer Tammo Hesselink began a process of swapping favourites and deep cuts to spread across this 2x12” doublepack. The compilation avoids any obvious centrepieces through masterful sequencing, allowing for moments of refrain and tempo changes in a way that helps add to their overall vision of what this music is and can be; “We wanted to frame hardcore in a different light, looking at this idea of ecstasy through the traditional meaning of the word and exploring that symbolism”. By drawing from what some might consider the softer edges of the movement, the pair offer a look into the relevance of these tracks in the contemporary era, where the past years have seen both an explosion in popularity of old ambient/new-age music and a certified jungle revival.

Over the past five years, Mark has forged a unique identity in underground drum’n’bass, alloying traditional junglist motifs and luminous electroacoustic ambience to devastating effect. Developing his sound through a series of singles and EPs on A Colourful Storm and Berghain’s Unterton imprint and collaborating with likeminded peers in both classical and soundsystem spheres, A Colourful Storm presents the culmination of his work and debut album: a two-part study in rhythm, timbre and texture of monolithic scale. Mark’s ambitions had been clear from the outset. Integrier Dich Du Yuppie (2017) and The Least Likely Event Will Occur In The Long Run (2018) are not titles of fleetingness but statements of grave philosophical heft. The relationship between—and division of—people, place and power animated Mark’s production and has remained a pertinent theme throughout his work: the mechanics of force, the cunning of reason, the invisible but crucial hand of chance. Within these groundbreaking sides lies a synergy between splintering rhythmic elements and extraordinary atmospheric passages—the latter most deeply explored in Not Kennt Kein Gebot! (2022), a heart-on-your-sleeve mixtape pitting post-Second Viennese School disciples like Luigi Dallapiccola against an era-fusing suite of compositions from Radulescu, Zemlinsky and Monteverdi. This direction is also explored on Mark's monthly NTS Radio show, True As Few. Bridging the sonic qualities of post-tonal composition and soundsystem frequencies is nothing new—the oeuvre of Christoph de Babalon immediately comes to mind—but here, Mark attempts to meet both poles on their own terms through two meticulously arranged longform pieces. Any suggestion of connection to dance music history has been thrown out for rhythmic arrangements that skirt the contradiction between strict logical coherence and human perception. What on the surface seems hostile reveals a welcoming catacomb of connections between elements that stake their claim, disappear, merge and finally reappear—their return sculpted by the intricate mediation of similar and dissimilar elements. The album is deeply personal, too. Following a Stanislavski-led path through fragments of his pre-maturity music history, Mark connects memories of free jazz drumming and modern percussion ensemble performance with the joy of choral singing, ad hoc kitchen-sink group improvisation and those moments where life seems to swing on a hinge of musical feeling.。

This album, which includes the two latest tracks under the name Basic Rhythm, which has maintained a strong dedication to UK Bass, is a masterpiece in which the aesthetics of an underground pirate radio DJ OG are incorporated into an atmospheric and ravy Jungle/DnB sound. In recent years, he has continued to develop a fairly consistent musical style based on influences from Jungle, DnB, Grime, Rave, etc., as well as industrial sound design, and those who like him will be hooked.

Hold tight for a double-sized drop of ruff n’ tuff jungle variations as Dead Man’s Chest and King Kutlass throw their weight around with six seismic slammers built for the shockout section. We previously welcomed Bristol’s Western Lore doyen Alex Eveson to Sneaker Social Club alongside Posse back in 2019, and now he returns with King Kutlass in tow for a 2 x 12” of heavy duty, darkside rollers. The Western Lore remit has always been to push at the limits of the jungle template, embracing distinctive twists without losing the fundamentals of the sound, and that comes through loud and clear on this searing workout. From the compression chamber, stepped breaks of ‘Ride The Storm’ to lurid rave game-ender ‘We Control’, this is not club music for the feint hearted. There’s even space for nightmarish 4/4 thrust n’ stabs on ‘Heart Of The Sun’, pointing to the liminal zone where breakbeat hardcore, techno and rave all crossed paths en route to more fully formed stylistic conventions. That’s the vibe which runs throughout this EP, where the rules feel a long way off and the madcap sample layering is heavily tipped towards psychological annihilation under the stuttering glare of the strobe light.

To describe the sound it makes sense to bring back what was the press release of “Sigma/Tau” the first record of NPLGNN released in 2014 on Where To Now? (RIP): “NPLGNN creates a less pampered style of body music, stripping away the usual signifiers such as melodies and bass lines to create something more utilitarian, brutal and pure. This is the pre-babel language of dance music - it's cadences are rhythmic and its meaning is comprehensible to all on an innate, primal level.” Ten years later this tape makes those words still remarkable to describe the sound of the Neapolitan head.Among a bunch of unreleased sounds you can go through all the NPLGNN recent records for LavaLava, Youth, Hundebiss and it own lathe cuts series dubbed here and there with vocal cuts intersections. Coming off like the rude son of early ‘00s breakcore heroes, quoting the Manchester Boomy heads, NPLGNN delivers a 45 mins mutant soundsystem recording. It's acid dancehall punk, amorphed ragga riddimz, or whatever you want to call it. 100% dancefloor melting. Ask Aphex Twin for a couple of IDs ; Soundsystem mutant NPLGNN shells blistering and bone rattling yardcore styles in his recording made at Barcelona’s Human Razzmatazz in 2023 A decade since they emerged via Where to Now? and the NZO-related OKNO label, with subsequent turns for everyone for Reel Torque to Youth and their rhythms rinsed by likes of AFX, plus killer programming of the MBE mix series and Forever Now with Dave saved; NPLGNN has surely held his ground in ruggedest mutant dancehall terrain. ‘Live At Human Razzmatazz’ catches them in full flow rattling thru stacks of custom soundsystem dubplates that roughly resemble the millennium era surge of scuzzy breakcore by Ambush don DJ Scud or DJ /rupture as much as his contemporary, Ossia, or even Rat Heart’s rudest; harnessing coarse machine rhythms of spark-sputter hi-hats and nervy snares with depth charge subs and ragga chat, crudely dubbed into the red and maximized for steppers pressure and battling stacks.

This 2-LP set and CD from EM Records chronicles the legacy of underground Japanese techno legends Cycheouts - pronounced ‘psyche outs’ in English. Originally formed in 1994, the group quickly became a centerpiece of Osaka's underground electronic scene. Led by main producer Akira Ohashi, Cycheouts melded influences from jungle, drum'n'bass, digital hardcore, and experimental noise music, all of which are explored in this compilation of tracks painstakingly selected by two true Cycheouts experts. Cycheouts' music and live performances went on to inspire a number of successful Japanese dance music acts, and can be seen as an origin point for the "nerdcore techno" movement of the early 2000s. This archive of the early work of Cycheouts provides an essential look at the birth and development of hardcore jungle in Japan, including multiple tracks featuring the full Cycheouts lineup with original vocals and multiple MCs. Most of these tracks are available on LP for the first time, and have been newly remastered for the format; the set also includes extensive liner notes in both English and Japanese.
