Shackleton’s work explores conceptual and spiritual themes with an emotional depth beyond most artists working in European dance music today, and his visions of inner space, apocalypse and dread are more timely than ever before.\n\nThis record was conceived after Holy Tongue and Shackleton shared a festival line up in Sweden. Holy Tongue were initially keen to get Shackleton to remix one of their existing tracks but they soon decided to have a project together and work on some fresh new music, allowing Shackleton to do something more creative with it in the studio. Thus Holy Tongue recorded a collection of raw material in the studio and sent it to Shackleton. The result is far more than the sum of its parts. For a new generation who'd been forced to acclimatize at an early age to their terminally online reality, their older cousins' preoccupation with bells and whistles was beginning to wear thin - a listless, twee and dreamy alternative was beginning to materialize. Simultaneously inspired by the experimental pop fringe (think Jessy Lanza), the free mixtape-fueled R\u0026B\/rap mainstream and their state sponsored Scandi musical education, Smerz characterized this new wave; indeed, when they released their latest album 'Big City Life', they were basically veterans, having spent the last few years engineering a sound that propelled them from Copenhagen to all the way to Seoul, co-producing K-pop group NewJeans' 'Get Up' EP with fellow Scandinavian Erika de Casier. Now they were part of a sui generis movement, alongside Pitchfork faves like ML Buch, Clarissa Connelly and Astrid Sonne.\n\n'Big City Life EDITS' presents 14 remixes of the album, one for each track provided by crooked web of their friends and contemporaries - with an extra cut tacked on from Stoltenberg and Motzfeldt themselves. And they do a good job of using their stems to goad their loose scene into showing its scope. In typically irreverent fashion, they launch the record with a mix from Danish duo Yrdloop, one of the set's least starry inclusions. Still, founded by Rhythmic Music Conservatory alumni, Yrdloop immediately lay out the contextual landscape, transforming the piano-led 'Big dreams' into an iridescent mesh of instrumental vamps, Oneohtrix-inspired FM exhalations and shimmering acoustic strums. Sonne meanwhile replies to Smerz's killer edit of 'Say you love me' with her dusty, casually reflective cover of 'Easy', and NEW YORK add some essential Stateside absurdity to 'Imagine This', showing that there's DNA outside of Scandinavia. The majority of the reworks might cluster around Copenhagen - tracks from Fine, Molina, Erika de Casier, ML Buch, Haploplus+ and Clarissa Connelly - but this only allows the sound to harden around its core elements. \n\nDanish-Chilean singer-songwriter Molina adds a dubby, South American lilt to 'Roll the dice', and ML Buch provides radio-friendly, cybernetic soft-rock glam to 'But I do', while Fine backs up the homespun 'Rocky Top Ballads' with a suitably Mazzy Star-inspired cover of 'A thousand lies'. There's no real genre present, but there's a tangible vibe - an omnivorous appetite for music that culminates in restraint and nonchalance, not hyperactive DAW-powered extravagance. The inclusion of Clairo, who features on Smerz and VVTZJ's edit of 'You got time and I got money', is a canny acknowledgement of the American lo-fi pioneer's enduring influence and even Toxe, who helped blur the lines between experimental club music and pop with her STAYCORE collective, turns up to extend the sleepy 'Street style' beyond its original frame. For far too long, twentieth-century Dutch electronic music has remained hidden away in dim archives, only occasionally accessible under optimal conditions. Many compositions have not been heard for decades, perhaps after being presented to an audience only once. For this project, the original tapes were carefully traced in basements and archives, including the mysterious work Chronos, which was rediscovered in the collection of the Netherlands Music Institute (NMI). Even close collaborators of De Leeuw were unaware of the existence of Chronos. Another highlight of this release is the radiophonic oratorio Job (1956), which was awarded the Prix Italia radio prize by broadcaster Rai.\n\nThe recordings were digitised by experts at the Institute of Sonology and the Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid (Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision). The music was then meticulously restored and mastered in the studio of Jos Smolders (EARLabs), in accordance with modern standards, while strictly adhering to the composer’s original artistic intentions.\n\nThe edition includes eight works composed between 1956 and 1982. The collection is released as a deluxe LP and CD box set and is also available via streaming and as high-resolution downloads. A grant from the city of Chicago helped push the project toward completion during one of the most unstable periods of her life. “I made a difficult decision that completely changed the stability I knew,” she says. “And so the record really is a representation of me returning to myself and gathering all these ideas and desires into one final offering.”\n\nThat sense of accumulation defines the album’s beauty, as it feels handmade in the truest sense: every synth patch, vocal harmony and drum pattern carries the residue of lived experience. As a result, the collaborators surrounding megiapa function as witnesses to her becoming. Bassist The Growth Eternal and keyboardist Ahmad Muhammad (also known as Kafari) help ground the music in a deep-pocketed warmth, while drummer Mekala Session gives several tracks their stormy propulsion. Elsewhere, contributions from Blvck Spvde, Aankha Neal, Telemakus, Aisha Mars and 10.4 ROG add texture to songs already rich with feeling.\nFor megiapa, creative partnership became part of the lesson. “Do I continue to take up space on this track,” she recalls asking herself, “or do I allow the piano to shine through?” Learning when to step back and let the music breathe became an act of growth. Floating atop bright keys and an incessant chime, the song invites listeners toward reflection without losing its breezy accessibility. “Everything we need is within us,” she says of the track’s message. “We all reflect each other.” It’s the kind of statement that could sound overly sentimental in less capable hands, but megiapa delivers it with grounded sincerity.\n\nElsewhere, Intentions reveals its bruises more directly. “Can’t Believe” — featuring Resavoir’s Will Miller on EVI, horn and piano — confronts the wreckage of a relationship with startling honesty, pairing Roland 808-inspired drums with aching reflections about longing for something that ultimately could not survive. “I can’t believe what I wanted,” she sings at the song’s center. Yet even here, the album isn’t bitter. The pain becomes a nudge to strive higher.\n\nThat tension between disquiet and faith reaches its apex on “Crashing Down,” one of the album’s most resonant moments. Written during a Mexico retreat amid the chaos of the pandemic, the song emerged almost like a mantra. When she later revisited the song during periods of upheaval, the lyrics sounded like a prophecy.\n\nIntentions is also deeply informed by Black spiritual thought and cosmic possibility. Tracks like “(_(_on_the_spaceway_)_)” and “on the spaceway (frfr)” channel the liberatory philosophies of Sun Ra, imagining expansiveness beyond earthly limitation. “I imagine Black people in this spaceway just enjoying themselves in their full expansiveness,” she explains. In that sense, the album joins a lineage of Black experimental music that treats joy itself as resistance.\n\nThough International Anthem may seem like an unexpected home for the project, the partnership makes sense. The label has supported megiapa since her earliest days in Chicago, with figures like Alejandro “King Hippo” Ayala encouraging her long before the wider world caught on. “It’s like putting music out with my family at this point,” she says.\n\nBy the time Intentions concludes, what remains is the feeling of having accompanied someone through a profound shift. The album asks listeners to relinquish their fear of the unknown. Again and again, megiapa returns to the same guiding principle: trust the process; everything will work out.\n\n“Fear is a hindrance to our dreams and our goals and the beauty of life,” she says. “Please dream with me. It was “like stepping into a time-warp”, the duo say. “Period correct pre-amps, compressors and instruments recreated the tones of the era, and combined with Sir Jun’s magical sound and touch – it created an authenticity so completely right for the moment.”\n\nIn exploring a sound born of the diaspora with roots in British soul music, Coco Okayo makes full use of the polymath abilities of both Jess and Graham. While they provide vocals, percussion, flutes and production, they still manage to carve out space for regular Margate collaborators (including keyboardist Steve Pringle, Graham’s bandmate in Pigeon), as well as tapping Filipino connections in the United States such as Wyn Avillas and Ian Santillano.\n\n“I felt like the melodies and flurries of flute poured out of me during this whole process - it was quite freeing and explorative and unlike any album we’d made previously”, says Jess.\n\nThe resulting album dances around genres and influences, from OPM to soul, disco-funk and trip-hop, refusing to be categorised as any one thing and yet cohesive in its sound. Mento is the genre at the root of all of it – we have the form to thank for ska, rock steady, reggae, dub and everything that came after, and he is the one who put a guitar in her hands. An inheritance, a gift and a map. Even her name is part of it, though she will tell you she landed on it more by feel than reason. She records as June McDoom, born Alyssa, June being a nickname one of her grandmothers, Joan, went by, a name she thought was cool to carry and simply liked the sound of. An etheric channel that reverberates all the same. A dub all its own. For years, this was just the sound of her family, a comfort and constant companion that did not yet feel as if it also belonged to her. It took going out into the world, living, loving, learning and coming back home, to find that she had earnestly built a full life of her own – and that there was a sound to meet it. She put on an Alton Ellis record one day and realized the soundshe had been seeking had been there her whole life, a steady groove meant to hold anyone with ears and heart enough to listen.\n\nShe set out to create and ended up making music that held space for all of the sounds and\nfeelings that she loved. Not a reggae or dub record, not a folk record, but the harmony of one\nlaid over the rhythm of the other. Sonic liminality, echoed out into the cosmos in some places. She and her longtime partner, Evan Wright, created the songs slowly, by hand. Songcraft for the pair meant stacking parts over time, chasing texture, exercising restraint in their explorations, keeping things minimal on purpose. Nearly every one began as just her voice and a guitar before the two of them fleshed it out, Evan playing most of the instruments while June layered in the vocal harmonies she so loves to arrange. They opened the record by cutting live drums with Victor Axelrod, the producer who records as Ticklah, down in his Sunset Park basement, then carried the songs home and built the rest themselves across long days in the studio they keep at home, tracking to tape and digital both, even hauling out to a friend’s house for the harp. Dub and Wall of Sound influencing the low end, with echoes of Dionne Warwick, Minnie Riperton, Pentangle and the washy, stellar guitars of Cocteau Twins’ Victorialand haunting the outer edges of what her sound would shapeshift into. Angelic heroics, and nothing less.\n\nIt was not easy, by any stretch. A casual listener won’t know that she spent twelve hours a\nday mixing because she wanted perfection, or that she started the process over when, on a\nChristmas visit, her parents told her that they couldn’t hear enough of her vocals. “Without\nYou,” the album’s lead single, carries the fingerprints of that patience: it began with live drums running straight through and slowly became something else entirely, the deeper she steeped it in Cocteau Twins, until a dub bassline and a shoegaze shimmer met in the middle, in the last place you would think to look for either one. That was the standard she wanted to meet and surpass – but you, listener, will only hear a record that could have gone overboard but didn’t. Generous in its way, it invites you in as an active participant on the path, leaving room for you instead of telling you how to feel.\n\nAt the heart, the core of all of this, is June’s grandmother Aggie. She formed the center, both\nin family and in this recording – a guide for June in moments of stillness, in moments of\nuncertainty, and at the edges that she wants to keep close. Harmony is the thing that reaches her, and now it is the thing she effortlessly reaches for. You will hear it all over this album, with chords opening up to greet you before you have any idea what she’s singing about.\n\nYet and still, an elder also traveled a similar path: Her grandfather, Colin Smith, was a\ndistinguished mento man who played banjo and guitar, built his own rumba boxes and worked hard to keep Jamaica’s oldest form of rural acoustic folk music and storytelling alive. Mento is the genre at the root of all of it – we have the form to thank for ska, rock steady, reggae, dub and everything that came after, and he is the one who put a guitar in her hands. An inheritance, a gift and a map. Even her name is part of it, though she will tell you she landed on it more by feel than reason. She records as June McDoom, born Alyssa, June being a nickname one of her grandmothers, Joan, went by, a name she thought was cool to carry and simply liked the sound of. An etheric channel that reverberates all the same. A dub all its own. For years, this was just the sound of her family, a comfort and constant companion that did not yet feel as if it also belonged to her. It took going out into the world, living, loving, learning and coming back home, to find that she had earnestly built a full life of her own – and that there was a sound to meet it. She put on an Alton Ellis record one day and realized the soundshe had been seeking had been there her whole life, a steady groove meant to hold anyone with ears and heart enough to listen.\n\nShe set out to create and ended up making music that held space for all of the sounds and\nfeelings that she loved. Not a reggae or dub record, not a folk record, but the harmony of one\nlaid over the rhythm of the other. Sonic liminality, echoed out into the cosmos in some places. She and her longtime partner, Evan Wright, created the songs slowly, by hand. Songcraft for the pair meant stacking parts over time, chasing texture, exercising restraint in their explorations, keeping things minimal on purpose. Nearly every one began as just her voice and a guitar before the two of them fleshed it out, Evan playing most of the instruments while June layered in the vocal harmonies she so loves to arrange. They opened the record by cutting live drums with Victor Axelrod, the producer who records as Ticklah, down in his Sunset Park basement, then carried the songs home and built the rest themselves across long days in the studio they keep at home, tracking to tape and digital both, even hauling out to a friend’s house for the harp. Dub and Wall of Sound influencing the low end, with echoes of Dionne Warwick, Minnie Riperton, Pentangle and the washy, stellar guitars of Cocteau Twins’ Victorialand haunting the outer edges of what her sound would shapeshift into. Angelic heroics, and nothing less.\n\nIt was not easy, by any stretch. A casual listener won’t know that she spent twelve hours a\nday mixing because she wanted perfection, or that she started the process over when, on a\nChristmas visit, her parents told her that they couldn’t hear enough of her vocals. “Without\nYou,” the album’s lead single, carries the fingerprints of that patience: it began with live drums running straight through and slowly became something else entirely, the deeper she steeped it in Cocteau Twins, until a dub bassline and a shoegaze shimmer met in the middle, in the last place you would think to look for either one. That was the standard she wanted to meet and surpass – but you, listener, will only hear a record that could have gone overboard but didn’t. Generous in its way, it invites you in as an active participant on the path, leaving room for you instead of telling you how to feel.\n\nAt the heart, the core of all of this, is June’s grandmother Aggie. She formed the center, both\nin family and in this recording – a guide for June in moments of stillness, in moments of\nuncertainty, and at the edges that she wants to keep close. Indeed, the song “Memory” was\nwritten with her in mind. That is the light making its way through the pinhole in this camera of the mind, the guide that helps June to focus, to see and to step forward confidently. People who love you showing the way, their energy still present and shining even when their form has moved on.\n\nThere’s a harder, quieter undercurrent that moves through this album – one that June\nexplores in “Outside the Window.” There are so many different iterations of a self, all\nbelonging to so many different sets of people and realities. What obligation do you have to\nthem, and can you meet all of the promises that you made to yourself in those sleepy, hazy\nmoments when you pretended you weren’t a kid anymore? What is authenticity? Who defines\nthat? Who do you owe it to? What do you owe yourself? These are questions that prowl\naround the corners of the overthinking artist’s mind when creating an album this intimate, this exacting, this personal. You’re learning how to be a person in public while keeping a degree of interiority all of your own, trying to make sure that you don’t let your life pass you by as you’re trying to meet your own standards.\n\nFuture You is an ancestor that your current self gets to meet.\n\nAs June layers these songs, she is figuring out who she is in real time. The album holds that\nanswer, and offers it to you, the listener, as well. It knows that none of us are just one person,\nbut a multitude of people we’ve had to let go of, kill off, commit to meeting at a future date and time. A continuum: There’s an entire lineage of selves that we all carry with us each day, and others that we will eventually meet. We are reaching back to those people and waving hello to them at the same time, along with the lineages of people who helped to shape us and get us here.
